Question Break In Period 04 CL55

Hey Everyone,

I just took delivery on an 04 CL55 this afternoon and i am curious about the Break in period outlined in the manual. I guess my main question is...is this really necessary? With my 02 M5 i don't recall adhering to the break in period and the car performed beautifully. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance
Alex

Your call, I follow the break in sticker on the windshield. This has been debated here many times.

It is not so much the engine as all of the other components of the car.

As you will hear, the cars that Mercedes uses at the AMG Challenge are brand new and wrung out from mile 1.....

Enjoy and congrats.

I would let the car run to it's first oilchange before I hit the pedal for real for any longer periods.
At least when you have paid a lot of money for such a great car it's unnessesary to take any risks, no matter what anyone else says.
It's not that the engine will brake down.. it's just that the wear on the internal parts of the engine will be much higher.

So that's how I would have treated the situation anyhow.

Thanks for replying. I am probably going to stick to the advice of MBusa even though it is hard to resist the temptation to give it a work out. Again thanks for taking the time to respond.

I observed the break-in restrictions mostly, although the temptation to push it is high. I changed the Mobil One and filter after 1000 miles. There is probably a good reason for the factory recommended break-in. I can report that the engine seems much more powerful after a few thousand miles and at about 10k it is noticably more powerful.

Drive it like you stole it. This is no BS. If you want the rings to really seat well and do the best you can from your engine then warm it up to temp and then wring it out hard, hard, hard.

Others will disagree, but then there engine will NEVER be as good running as yours and tight.

LOL. That was my theory. This is basically what i did with my E39 M5 and it didn't seem to phase the car one bit. I have been driving it (the CL) for a few days now and have had some nice spirited drives, but for the most part i have been holding back. Thanks for the advice. Your words will probably ring in my head everytime i pull out of my neighborhood
