Test drive

I'm new here. I'm stepping up from M3 SMG to hopefully CL55 or CL600.
I test drove last night 02 CL55 and 02 CL600.
As you guys know they are both toned down versions of the 03, 04, and 05s.
The feel of CL55 is about the same as CL600 on the streets. On the freeway it is another story (or thread).
The seats are the same in comfort and support.
The 02's Nav screen is small and off center compared to the 03s. They are both Non TFTs but dual scan. Hard for me to accept that a $119k car cannot have a TFT screen or a DVD based (04 now has DVD) Nav.
Both cars feel solid. The CL600 is about $7k lower even thought its mileage is 20,000 miles less.
My wife was in the passenger seat and was clueless regarding what's under the hood and their corresponding performance. I guess I want to keep it that way.

Without hesitation I would go for the CL600. There's nuthin nicer than that silky smooth V12. I'm also in the market for a CL600. Drove the 600 and was seduced. I drove a CL55 last week and was not impressed when compared to the 600. It didn't feel as powerful and the ride was too hard rough for me.. Nice car, hard ride. I suspect also that preowned 600s have had an easier life given what the dealer tells me is the typical buyer. Also, lower mile 600 has more warranty left.

This is going to sound stupid, and I am not going to justify it......but, under or equal to 35 years old = CL55. Over 35 years old, cl600.

P.S.

Before I get flamed, please remember that I am only talking about this person's decision.

I am in no way saying that someone under 35 can't drive a MB 600 and not saying a person over 35 can't drive an AMG.

Just different targetted audiences. Rguy does have a point.

I think the more aggressive nature of the AMG might be suited well to a younger persons attitude.

maybe if $$$$ is no object, why not tune the 600 for a fraction of the cost ?

Honestly I wonder what is going on at MB. The 00-03 AMV8 versus the V12 were rated within 10 horsepower of each other.... then they supecharge a V8 and twin tubocharge the V12 and still, they come out with EXACTLY the same horsepower on two completely different motors. 493. If that is not some marketing decision I don't know what is, because I seriously doubt these are coincidences. I will bet the dyno has a different story to tell.

What the logic is behind this marketing I am still trying to figure out.

Why produce two different engines with such similar power characteristics.... and then put them in the same cars.

I wonder if it somehow increases sales...
