I know it has nothing to do with the CLA45AMG but why couldn't MB get close to this out of its 2.0? Mad power!

Eh, probably because they wanted it to be reliable?
It's one thing to be making "mad power", but it's entirely another to be making it reliably, from an engine and transmission that's meant to last at least 120k+ miles without any major issues.
I've had my fair share of ridiculously tuned (600+ rwhp) but unstreetable, and definitely unreliable, vehicles. I'll stick with something I can have fun, have great mpg, and haul a small family in for the next 4-5 years.

Didn't get the impression this was going to be a production model. Nonetheless, it's a testament to what the VW group can produce and wanting to change the image of the beetle. Ultimately, I think we all know it won't be long before the CLA45 power numbers are dwarfed by the competition. I would however agree that it isn't the fact that MB couldn't produce this power, but rather a choice not to in order to keep fuel efficiency, reliability and overall price in check.
