Increasing the Power-Band! Mishimoto's CLA45 AMG Intake!

Hey guys,

As some of you are aware, we recently completed the development of our intake system designed specifically for the CLA45 AMG. Our engineering team put a ton of work into extracting some extra power from the AMG, and we are very pleased with the results. A few of the key components of our kit are discussed below!

Silicone Inlet Hose Design

Our team designed a silicone inlet hose to replace the factory-equipped rubber piece. Not only is our unit more durable, but it also provides a huge improvement in airflow and eliminates restrictions and turbulence seen in the factory piece. Below is a look at our initial prototype and the stock unit.

Stock inlet tube (left) and Mishimoto inlet tube prototype (right)

The stock tube essentially bumps from the filter size directly to the small OD of the compressor inlet. This creates a wall at the end of the tube which may result in some airflow turbulence. To smoothen airflow in this area, our inlet tube is designed to provide a fluid transition from the filter to the compressor inlet, reducing the chance of restrictions or turbulence within this portion of the intake.

The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software we use displays the velocity of a fluid (air, in this instance) passing through a component modeled in 3D. We modeled both the stock inlet tube and our counterpart to provide a nice visual representation of what we were able to achieve with our design. Check out the comparison below!

Inlet tube CFD analysis

For an intake system, you want to see the highest velocity possible. By eliminating the step in this tube and by providing a smooth inner surface, we were able to improve airflow substantially over the stock inlet tube.
The final inlet hose is shown below.

Aluminum Airbox Design

To cope with engine bay heat, we’ve designed an aluminum airbox which encloses the filter and is fed air using the factory duct. Additionally, we have a port to accommodate the factory ECU heat sink.

Rubber weatherstripping lines the edges of this unit to prevent any vibrations during operation.

Air Filter & Venturi

We are utilizing our Mishimoto oiled air filter with internal venture to provide optimal air filter surface area as well as optimal flow through the intake.

This unit sounds great on the AMG and provides fantastic flow.

Dyno Testing

We did not stop at design work, this intake also endured extensive testing to provide data for our power gains and to ensure this intake provided safe operation during all driving conditions.

Mercedes cold-air intake testing data

As you can see on the stock plot, the car builds power nicely through a majority of the power band but seems to fall flat at higher rpm, right around 5600 rpm. With our intake system installed, we were able to continue to build power all the way to 6200 rpm. Our intake allows for greater top-end power without sacrificing any power on the low end, which is great.

Within this upper range we are seeing maximum gains of over 20 whp and peak gains of 17 whp. These are great numbers, especially for a vehicle already making nearly 350 horsepower at the wheels.

Mmmmm... liking that silicon inlet pipework.

Can you ship these to the UK, if so what would be the cost please?

Thanks for the interest guys! This component will only be available within our intake kit. We do not intend to offer the silicone inlet tube as an independent product.

Thanks Shaunee! We do offer international shipping, a quote can be obtained after adding our kit to your cart after following our pre-sale link. In addition, we will likely be sending several kits to our UK warehouse once these are released. If you don't mind waiting until these are released, purchasing from one of our UK distributors may be a better option in terms of expense.

Thanks

Find a way of getting through to your .com site, but your shipping only lets me choose between the US or Canada.
