please help, key problem

Hi
I bought a new key from a mercedes dealer, for my Mercedes A190 petrol 2000 reg, two weeks ago which stoped working properly after one day.
I can still use the key to start the engine but cant use it to lock the car and activate the alarm.
Today i had a booking at the mercedes dealer from where i got the key to check the faults.
Before they started i was asked to sign a paper to confirm i'am agree to pay £180 for diagnostics in case the key it is not faulty.
After 4 hours waiting i been told the key its not faulty, they are very "nice guys" and i'm not being charged for diagnostics, but i have to pay them £662 to change the stock control unit which they cant prove its faulty. They said the stock control unit not receiving signal from the key so needs to be changed but they can get any faulty codes because the car is too old.
Any advise??
