Question 2006 A170 Transmission Control Unit faulty

I have a 2006 A170 automatic. A couple of weeks ago it started giving a transmission error message and slipping into safe mode. The message goes off when the car is switched off for a while, but is now re-appearing more frequently, especially when going uphill.

I took the car to MB, they did some diagnostics and told me that the Transmission Control Unit was faulty, and cannot be fixed/repaired. They quoted me about USD3000 for fitting a new one, and told me that the TCU needed to be shipped from Germany (which would take about 10 days or so).

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? is it true that the TCU cannot be fixed in SA? Is there any other cheaper option to get it sorted? I will appreciate your suggestions on this. Thanks
