How To Guide - Engine Air Filter

This how to guide is for replacing the engine air filter in a 2019 Mercedes A220, this should be a similar process for all years with the 2.0 liter M260 Engine. This is an easy process and is recommended it be changed annually depending on your driving environment.

Part: Engine Air Filter

Hengst - HEN-E1621L
Mann - MAN-C28034

Step by Step Guide
Step 1 - Remove the ECU cover on the right side. This is done by simply pulling up on the cover. It is held in by 3 rubber grommets on 3 points (see image with the 3 locations in red)

Pull up on the cover

Note the 3 grommet points

Step 2 - Unclip the ECU, do not unplug the connectors. Then lift up from the back and pull back to free the ECU from the lip at the front. Then fold back and out of the way.

Unclip these 2 clips, 1 on each side

Then fold back and out of the way. Not the ECU has NOT been disconnected.

Step 3 - Remove cable clip on the right side, depress the tab and pull up and then set to the side.

Depress this (shown with pliers) cable clip to remove

Step 4 - Unscrew the 4 - T25 screws for the top cover of the engine air filter housing. Note these screws do not come all the way out (prevents it from falling and getting lost) but ensure they are loosened all the way.

Step 5 - On the air output tube to the engine, pull the clip out to loosen connection, this is needed for the next step.

Pull clip

Note the clip does not need to come all the way out, you will feels the resistance as if falls into an open state

Step 6 - Pull the top air filter cover up and then out from the output tube. Be gentle to avoid damaging the tube or gasket when removing. Remove your old air filter.

Step 7 - Clean and vacuum out the air filter housing or any debris.

Cleaned out air filter housing

Cleaned the top cover off as well

Step 8 - Install new air filter and then reverse the process - Air filter cover re-install and screw in (Hand tight), re-engage the clip on the output tube, clip on the cable clip on the right side, secure the ECU back on top and clip into place, press on the ECU cover. Note on securing the ECU back in place, ensure the 2 tabs sit under the black plastic retaining pieces. See picture
