Steering wheel vibration over bumps – W177 A-Class / W247 B-Class – seeking advice
I'm experiencing a persistent steering wheel vibration issue on my Mercedes (W177/W247 platform) and hoping to get some insight from others who may have experienced something similar.
The symptom:
- Vibration is felt through the steering wheel specifically when the front wheels go over bumps, road joints, or uneven surfaces
- It has been getting progressively worse
- It is noticeable at low speeds and worsens over bumps
- It is not speed-dependent (not a high-speed motorway shimmy)
- Turning off all driving aids (lane keep, cruise, speed limiter, parking assist) makes no difference – vibration remains identical
- New tyres fitted
- Wheel balancing done (additional weights added, but this seemed to make it slightly worse)
- Full suspension and steering inspection by workshop – no mechanical faults found
- U045A00 – Implausible data received from Parktronic
- U11A600 – Communication with radar sensor has a fault
The workshop believes it is either transmission-related or caused by the PARKTRONIC/RADAR system. They have cleared the car mechanically of any suspension or steering faults.
My concern:
The vibration is bump-triggered and feels mechanical rather than electronics-related. I have disabled all ADAS systems and the issue persists unchanged. Online research and forums consistently point to front suspension components as the likely cause for this specific symptom pattern.
Components I suspect may not have been checked under load:
- Control arm bushings
- Ball joints
- Tie rod ends / track rods
- Sway bar links
- Strut top mounts
- Shock absorbers / dampers
- Steering rack mounts
- Wheel runout
- Has anyone experienced a similar bump-triggered steering vibration on W177 or W247 that turned out to be a specific component?
- Could U045A00 or U11A600 realistically cause a mechanical-feeling bump vibration?
- Could transmission mounts cause vibration that is specifically triggered only by bumps?
- Any recommended diagnostic steps or components to check that are commonly missed on a W177/W247 front-end inspection?
