380 SL R107 (Mysterious seat spring)

Good evening,
A few weeks ago I removed the two seats of my 1984 Mercedes 390SL R107 and as I removed the first one a large spring around 6"/7" in length popped out. I tried to see where it's attached to my studying the other seat and removing it gently but that also popped out, hence I was unable to see where it is attached to. I have re-attached it temporarily to a place where I think it should go but I'm not certain. I have a feeling it belongs to the seat leaver which allows one to move the seat forwards and backwards. Would anyone be able to supply me with a few photos taken from beneath their seat please where this spring is attached? Much thanks!

I can't tell from the photos but it could also be to help move the seat forward or backward, like those on more modern cars without the electric motor driving it.
