I believe that there is some sort of mandate to
1) get as many people to file electronicly (sp?)
2) to open it up to more people
I saw that article on the CNN web a couple of weeks ago. My state had free electronic filing for years now and people still bought the software. Go figure.

amdeutsch is right on point with those reasons. also i heard that they say online filing yields more accurate returns, you dont have to divulge all your info to a third party, you dont have to worry about it getting lost in the mail and some others. one downside i can foresee is that i think you couldnt work all the numbers like you may want, but who knows.
