Best way to disconnect Battery / "Sleep Mode"

I had the crazy idea of replacing my stock airbag cover with a leather one with red stitching to match my steering wheel, and it requires that the airbag be removed to do the cover swap. Everything I've seen says you need to disconnect the battery.
What is the best way to disconnect the battery and where in the car do I do this?
Also, I have heard about Sleep Mode or Standby Mode or Hibernation Mode, would this be adequit to "unpower" the car so I can remove the airbag? And how do you put the car in one of these modes?
I saw somewhere that you unlock the car or something, move the key far enough away so it's "out of range" of the car and wait 20-30 minutes and the car will "go to sleep"....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Open the trunk, Take out all the lining and you will find the battery. Disconnect the negative.

That is way easier said than done. The fuse box has a little cover/door on it but the rest of the lining pieces don't appear to be easy to get out without damaging something...
Where in the trunk area is the battery? Towards the back of the car or towards the front, on which side?
