Radar Detector Mounting Under Mirror

I searched here and didn't find too much, although there was a similar post in the newer E series that had some info but not too much.

Has anyone mounted a detector under the mirror? I tried a few days ago and the plastic cover for the dash camera is too bulky and the angle too great to mount the detector. The plastic part pushes away from the mirror, however I am reluctant to push it too far and even so, the angle of getting the little screws into both ends of the clamp to mount it on the mirror stalk is too great.

Back to the janky dual suction cups mount, I guess. That is fine, however, here in FL with the summer heat, the suction cups last about one season before they give out. Not a big deal, I am just wondering if anyone has successfully mounted one under the mirror.

It can be done, but I had to remove the windshield mirror/dashcam shroud, drill a couple holes to accommodate the radar mount assembly, and on from there. You're just using the plastic shroud as your mount base vs. the mirror stalk. It takes a little trial and error to find a location that works and will still clear the electronics attached to the windshield. And beware of the heatsink located there, it's HOT and will burn you, ask me how I know . It's a bit of a "bodge", but the end result looks good and is solid, and all you've sacrificed is an easily replaceable piece of plastic.

I recall having to do something similar with my 2017 E300. On my 2022 CLS450, I did manage to attach the mount to the mirror (barely), and so was hopeful for the same with the CLE, but no dice. If I get ambitious, maybe I can post some photos, but hopefully this can give you an idea or two.

Thanks for that info. Yah, it sounds like a minor procedure that I will dig into one of these days. Probably wait until "winter" here and give it a whirl.

That gives me an idea of what I am up against. Pictures would be super nice, however don't pull a hamstring over it all, there's no hurry at all.

I'll throw some photos up when I think of it. This video gives a good method for removing the shroud, our CLEs are very similar to this S-class:

I never bothered to finish actually doing this idea...I have no pics, nothing to add. I will get around to it eventually.
