Making a phone call via voice

How do you make a phone call via voice command?
Every time I say Hey Mercedes, call xxxxxxxx,
It says Apple Car play is connected but doesn't call.
What do I have to do to get Siri's to listen when I say call xxxxxxx?
In my BMW if I hold the button down, Siri's awakens, and I can say call xxxxxxx.
How do I do that here without going to the screen and searching through contacts and pressing a contact?

Hold the same button down for a second or so. What will happen is that instead of activating Hey Mercedes it will activate Siri and you may tell Siri to call so and so.

So, a quick tap of the button activates Hey Mercedes, press and hold the button activates Siri. After a few tries I hope you can get the hang of it.

Alternately, you can say, "Hey Siri! Call so and so", and it should also activate the system...

As said above. Works the same way as Siri Eyes Free works in every other car. Short press of the voice control button on the steering wheel activates the car's own voice control, and long press activates the phone's voice control regardless of whether the phone is connected via Bluetooth or via CarPlay. The only difference is with the latter, the car's own phone functionality is disabled. That's a limitation of CarPlay. While CarPlay is active, it handles all phone functions. If the phone is just connected via BT and CarPlay isn't active (background or foreground) then you can also make phone calls via voice and Hey Mercedes, but if CarPlay is active either in the foreground or background, you have to make phone calls via Siri. That's a bit of a downside with wireless CarPlay as CarPlay starts immediately ones the phone establishes connection with MBUX. I prefer wired CarPlay, so most of the time my phone is connected via BT and I can control everything through the car and then when I wanna use CarPlay I connect it to the USB port. I don't use CarPlay much in my own car, but use it as the primary system whenever I drive a loaner or rental car in order to instantly get my own personalized experience, including the ability to open my garage door from the CarPlay dashboard instead of having to carry a remote that I'll likely forget to remove after returning the loaner.

Got it. I wear glasses for reading and not in the car. The effing buttons are so small.
Saw it this morning. I would prefer buttons that actually move like in my BMW but it is what it is and so I have to adapt.
Thanks
