Sunroof Shade Options

I took a look at a new CLE53 AMG today and loved it…except for the sunroof. I’ve had sun damage in the past and typically option my cars without a sunroof (Porsches don’t come std with one). I noticed that the sunshade is a light material that allowed sunlight to filter through. Assuming that there are no factory options to eliminate the sunroof or have a solid shade, has anyone found a solution other than UV film?

I don't think the UV ray will get through that 'shade' enough to ruin anything unless you're parking it outside in the Sahara desert for 10 years...then it might fade some things, however I think you'll be fine.

Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear enough. I’m talking about sun damage to my skin, not the interior of the car.

Ah, different deal then.

Never heard of anyone trying to protect their skin from a sunroof (not saying that's a bad thing at all, just never heard of it). Maybe a Google search for something or tint it (tinting sunroofs is another bag of worms though and might not be your best option - do some searching on it and get some data points).

Down and dirty, you could always put a cut to fit towel, microfiber towel, sheet, etc. up there to protect yourself until you find something more "factory" looking.

Most modern sunroofs filter UV radiation like sunglasses. They use multiple UV absorbing layers. You get more UV through the side windows. The windshield typically also filters nearly 100% of UV.

Thanks. Side windows filter about 70% and sunroofs filter about 70% to 90% of uv rays depending on the brand. I ceramic tint my side windows to block out 98% of uv rays from them. I normally pass on sun roofs, but it doesn’t appear that I can do that on the cle 53.

Most of my sun damage came from motorcycles and convertibles, so I am more cautious than most when it comes to vehicles now.

You may wanna dig a little deeper. From what I remember, the MB sun/pano roofs filter out way more than that. Side windows are the weakest part. I had some actual test results at one point, but don't remember where I found them. But yes, coupes comes standard with panoroof in North America. The sedans at least in the past had a delete option for the sunroof.

Thanks I did. Numerous responses on-line from other MB owners looking into this also. The response from MB USA “The windshield blocks 97% of UV-A radiation and 99.9% of UV-B radiation.
• All other glass, including the sunroof, block 65-70% of UV-A and 99.9% of UV-B”. One fellow had his tint shop measure the sunroof in his MB and they got 68% absorption.

You may also consider applying black paint protective film on the outside of the sunroof glass. This would completely block out all sun rays.

I installed black PPF on the body colored roof section but it can also be applied to the glass sunroof.

Not being a butthead, but you could always apply some light sunscreen or lotion or something if you're worried about it.

Have you tried contacting MB directly?

Thanks. When you have sun damage, the dermatologist gives you side-eye even when the only Sun you’ve had is from walking to and from the car! I have to wear a 90 sunscreen which is like wearing zinc. No way I’m wearing that to work every day LOL! I have a new Macan S arriving this month, so I’ll ask my PPF guy about Tint options when I take it in.

I did ask the dealer and they gave me an AI generated spiel that wasn’t even close to being accurate. I also asked them to enquire about a sunroof delete order. I believe that is possible on European delivered cars based on the reviews posted on-line.

There is no delete option code for the panoroof in Europe. The panoroof is an extra cost option in Europe, so it can be added. That option is simply standard on a US spec car. Issue with removing it for a US spec car is that it is part of the homologation process, so as far as I know, they can't remove it w/o homologating the car without the panoroof. That would be very costly to you. Deleting the panoroof option would have to had been factored into the original homologation, so that both versions are crash tested in order to legally sell them in the US. Basically, they can't legally sell you one w/o the panoroof, unless they get it certified first. Your best option is to cover it up with vinyl film or get a different car that can be had w/o a sunroof.

Hi Zedder,
I agree with you. I'm in South Florida also and right away felt the sun coming right through, and the sun shade is so sheer! I had it tinted at the same time I did the rest of the car with ceramic.
It was really surprised by this also. The tint guy did an amazing job, now I can enjoy the sunroof without the shade.
