Lost to a 330ci...

Yup, we paced each other, gave the thumbs up and went at it from a roll. He jumped on me one car length while my car downshifted (stupid automatic) and I gave chase. 30-40-60-80-100...he maintained that one car length and I couldn't reel him in. At 110 I finally started catching up and was 1/2 a car length by his side until he hit the brakes. It was a good race and fair, but in my defense (yes, every loser has an excuse ) my check engine light has been on with a bad MAF sensor.

Could someone make me feel better and tell me that a malfunctioning MAF sensor can trim the fuel and slow me down?

Dont feel bad about that, those are really well built cars, i really like them. Also your wheels look kindof heavy so that could slow you down and the automatic problem could be solved if you run him again, prime your RPMs using touch shift so that will take back those seconds you lost due to hesitation.

maybe...could be very possible. Maf adjusts the engine according to air flow.
if your 208 is a 2000 and above you should have pushed your shifter to the lowest gear possible at that speed and turned your esp off before you gunned it. heard somewhere that with the esp off the trans. drives more aggressively.
if you did this you would have not gotten that delay on the downshift.
4.3L v8 lost to a 3.3L i6...you should go kill yourself!

I disagree on the "you should go kill yourself" part. The 330ci has a great engine and also a manual transmission gives it quite an advantage. Oh and its a 3.0 not a 3.3. Plus with the sport pkg its 0-60 is 5.9, it also has a weight advantage, plus there's no guarantee that the thing was stock

If your MAF is bad then your car is not running at full potential. When my MAF went bad i had HORRIBLe performance. Get that fixed and go race another 330ci and tell us what happens.

I'm not trying to sound anti-BMW, but it sounds more like a tie, how do people race on a roll? I'm guessing (unless there is a light up ahead) one guy hits it and the other guy hits right after...that would explain the jump.

On paper the BMW is a little quicker (5.9 0-60 vs 6.1 0-60 for the CLK), I think you need a few engine mods like a chip and an underdrive pulley kit. Plus I've read 18s slow a car down.

Who would have the advantage from a stand still?

Still, with a chip and pulley kit you would win from a stand still or rolling.

Sorry, but 330 wins every time.

For the record, I'm currently replacing my '99 M-Roadster with a '00 CLK so there is no real bias here. However, the I6 3 liter on that lighter 3 series chassis with a 5 speed will not be challenged by a CLK430. Remember, though - they are far different products with far different characteristics. Just because a 330 is a bit faster and lighter doesn't mean it's better. My M would destroy either of them, but I'm trading them for a CLK, right?

Str8 - Running correctly your car would take the BMW - get it fixed. Meanwhile, get in your car, look up and find comfort in the footprints.

Better yet, put more footprints up there with the new girl.

u should've KILLED him w/ no problems.... i once raced a Z4 3.0i same engine as the 330CI.... but i lost cause 1 i had 3 guys in the car the Z4 has a guy and a girl(weight advantage)... even if the car only had drivers i think the Z4 would still has it's weight advantage.... 2nd it was an SMG so it should response quicker... it was 1 car length b/t the both of us untill we need to turn into the road to his house(he was my friend)

get ur MAF fixed.... i had mine light up... got it fixed and felt a BIG difference above the 3000rpm pull....

Cool

Your mass airflow sensor is slowing you down because you will not lose to a 330.
I race my buddy that has a '95 m3 and on the highway we are door to door. In reply to the M roadster comment, it will not blow the doors off of a 430 because I used to have a 2000 M Roadster and my CLK is marganally faster on the highway, as my buddys M3 used to beat me. If you have a 2001 M roadster with the 315HP motor then you would win...... The only BMW's that will beat CLK430's are newer M's and maybe a 645.... and for the record I only have an eiseman race exhaust and filters....

Sorry to hear about the race but is sounds like once you get the MAF fixed you should have no problem aganist a 330i.
I noticed you have a 55 intake and was wondering if you noticed a difference and was it hard to install. Also how much did you pay or it, new or used? I'm asking because I'm thinking of selling my pullies and airbox when I get my car supercharged.
Thanks
Mario

My brother had an M coupe and we used to race all the time (when both cars were stock) and he would punish me to 60 but I'd pass him after that.

To be honest, the CLK55 intake didn't make that much of a difference from the driver's seat. Noise wise, it growled slightly more, but very very little difference. I will dyno them (stock and AMG) back to back this summer and will post the results. I paid $150 for the airbox and K&N filters with about 30K miles on it in excellent condition. They normally go for around $200-$250 used. And no, it was not hard to install...it simply fit right where the stock intake was. Minor dremeling was necessary so it would fit around the oil filter.

I also have a AMG C43 engine for sale to perk up that CLK for you! By the way ,the 330i will get the jump on you no matter what but you will catch him upstairs.

A while back i ran against a 330i convertible, I had 2 buddies in the car and I barely pulled on the bmw at lower speeds, but up higher, it was gg for the bmw. Get your car fixed, and it should be an easy win
