CLK320 Recall Notice - Harmonic Balancer

CLK320 Recall Notice - Harmonic Balancer
I just got an oil change today, and the service advisor at the dealership said a recall notice had been issued for my 2000 CLK320. On the invoice, it states "Harmonic Balancer" and "Check Vibration Damper". This sounds like some work I paid for last year, so I wonder if I will get a refund since it was subsequently recalled.

Here is the link to some of the issues for the 208 (V8)

You can find info on other models there too! It's scary but no mention of Harmonic Balancer, crank seals or anything else.
My CLK suffered the fate of a broken harmonic balancer a few weeks ago and I took it to my MB mechanic. (NOT related to MBUSA in any way except he worked for them for many years, and started his own shop after the Chrysler merger as he said their customer service and quality was going to S**T!)
Still I love my car and just wish MB wasn't so poor in the area of customer service!

Get the warranty claim if you can, but...
don't risk it. That sucker is guranteed to fail. It's not an expensive fix, if you take care of it, but potential tragedy if you don't.

It Effects all M112 V-6 and M113 V-8 engines from 1998 to around 2001 on some cars.
Due to the size of this campaign and amount of cars involved, MB will be sending letters to owners in stages. That way, 700,000 people don't all show up at the same time. They will inspect the PN# of your balancer and replace it if found to be one of the following numbers. 112 035 00 00 or 112 035 06 00.
The campaign states any previous non-warranty repairs paid for by clients,
will be eligible to receive reimbursement. You must provide adequate documentation for reimbursement.

Can you just call up your local stealerships service dept. Advise them about your VIN and tell them you want all TSB problems taken care of related to your vehicle for free? Even if your car is outside of warranty?

Call MB Customer Service and they say that the recalls have only gone out for S and CL classes but if you have a 208 you can take it to the dealer and they will check and fix the problem. If you have fixed the problem you can submit a claim for reimbursement.

I believe the pully itself would not be covered unless it failed due to a failed "Harmonic Balancer" which is really a crank shaft seal. If you just replaced the seal that should be covered. Check with you MB stealership.

That is not true, a harmonic balancer is not a seal. It is a heavy pulley bolted on the crankshaft that has another outer pulley surrounding it. The two parts are bonded together by a rubber ring separating the two. The purpose of this unit is to dampen vibrations of the engine and it is this rubber bonding material that fails and allows the outer pulley to shift or move forward or back, and upon contact with the front engine cover cause extensive damage. Partial failure can cause a rough running engine. The reason for the failure of this rubber bond is because the outer pulley on this Mercedes design has to carry the load of the accessory drive belt that is hooked to it. Most engine designs have the drive or fan belt connected to the solid inner pulley so there is no extra stress on the bonded rubber that separates the two pulleys.
