Black Rubber strip at bottom of door

2001 CLK430 Cab.
Black Rubber strip at bottom of door
Seeing another post reminded me of something that I always forgot to post. Why does the CLK430 Cabs. (maybe sedans too)have a black insert at the bottom of the doors? It seems to break up the lines. Why isn't it just painted silver(in my case Brilliant Silver) instead of being black? Why is it really there at all? No other cars have this.
