Appendix removal on the CLK?

So i was looking at making a cold air intake again, and i noticed a wierd empty black box that sits on top of the fuel rail and branches off of the tube running from the MAF to the throttle body. I asked a guy at the performance shop i was at what it was and his best guess was that it was an intake silencer, similar to an exhaust resonator. I figured, anything you can do to smooth airflow will help performance, even if only marginally, and who wants a quiet intake??? So i popped it off today, no check engine light, nothing wierd, just a little bit more sound from the intake (i think) and maybe some tiny increase in performance. I'd say no more than when you replace the airfilter with a new clean filter. But, its free, except for the $2 plug and the tiny bit of silicone i used so i think its worth the effort.
If perchance im wrong and this is something that shouldnt be removed, someone correct me, but as far as i know now, it seems kinda pointless. Here is my writeup...

Interesting.

An empty box, eh? I would go the the dealer and get a certified tech to ask them what the purpose of it is just in case.

yeah that is the intake resonator, it is listed as that in the parts list catolouge for the w208. I took it off a while ago and combined with a cone filter, it does add some more depth to the engine from 3500 and above, no adverse effects. I left my box there, I just put a cap inside the elbow with a clamp to prevent it from getting sucked into the intake tubing.
