Resonator delete. Pro&Con.

Will removing the Resonator couse loss of back pressure and therfore loss of low end power? Will it help make power by less restriction? Is the only gain more db and if so is it too loud as to sound Ridicules?
Pipe in and let me know what you have seen, heard.
Thanks.

Anyone have a view on this? Josh K did you remove the resonator when you did the last engine mod?

My resonator is gone. Didn't notice a power change (up or down) but the exhaust note definitely sounds much more agressive (not too much at all though). I'll record a sound clip this week. It's about 20 pounds off the car too (not a lot but every bit helps)

It's the best thing I've done to my car, cost me $16.10. Go ahead remove it, you won't miss it.

I'll pretty much agree with Josh. It sounds a little better but definitely not obnoxious or too loud and you lose a little weight. There's no performance increase though.

from what i've read... people have lost some torque and some can even feel it.... that's the only reason why i haven't removed it. if this is false.. i'm getting rid of the *****

I took it to the muffler shop that did the custom exhaust on my bimmer. They cut it off and replaced it with a 3" pipe. It is reversable if you keep the resonator.

All it does is soften the sound before it get to the exhaust. If anything it gives you an unrestricted path which makes for better exhaust flow.

Hmmmm...I was thinking of doing the same thing….but these cars are so sensitive…that I was afraid of taking it out and having a bunch of lights show up on my cluster of even F*** some other part up. Any opinions that by removing this part ….the car will survive (pardon my mechanical ignorance) .. BTW..I have a REMUS on my 6 banger

the word is that removing the resonator or going with a straight thru exhaust is that you lose some low end torque, but it enhances the full throttle performance...

You might lose low end torque due to lack of back pressues.
But I think that's more of the case on smaller engines...?

It is my understanding the less backpressure you have the better the engine performs. That what mufflers and hi-flow cats do, the decrease the backpressure.

After 2 days of thinking….$80 (for labor and 3”pipe)……the resonator is gone. Verdict…the car has a little more exhaust note…not too much and it does not drag anymore….seems like it just wants to get up and go more freely …Glad I did it!!! :p

I don't have before and after pics but when I get home from work I could try and take a pic of underneath.

All they do is cut off the resonator and weld a new straight pipe in. I don't know how you could make it look "unclean". Plus it's not like anyone ever looks under your car anyway.

Yeh…exactly as jtbeche stated above…it’s a simple job …cut both ends of the resonator and weld a pipe in its place. Note: there is a heat shield between the resonator and the drive shaft…make sure they don’t warp it if they use a torch to cut your pipe. That was a problem when they did mine. As soon as I left the shop there was a rubbing sound and they quickly found out that the heat shield was bent too much upwards so it was rubbing against the shaft. They removed the heat shield (4 bolts or so) and bent it back to the normal mold and everything was back to normal. Still glad I did it (no problems have shown up yet)!!!!
