Turn Signal not canceling?

A friend of mine owns a W201 and would always "click" the turn signal on for all the turns, by 60K miles his was worn and wouldn't self cancel after the turns. Living in SF, you make lots of turns...
I use the "lane change" position without clicking it all the way so as to not wear out the turn signal mechanism. As a result, I've never had to replace that part on any of my cars.
My oldest car has 118K on the clock and it the turn signal works like new. When I'm going to make U-turns or parallel parking, I'll click it into position for that situation to free up my hands and concentration.
Most all mfgr's have used plastic parts since the 60's, it isn't unique to MB.
When you let go, it goes back to the off position from the spring load. I do it with my finger tips - I can still keep my hand/palm on the wheel.
