Revving at lower RPMs

Yesterday, I was stuck at a railroad cross for 6 minutes. I put my car in park, idled, and then decided to rev it a bit. I noticed that once i hit 4500 RPM's, it would not rev any higher and rumble then go back down to 4000 RPM's. Is it normal to not rev higher than 4500 at standstill?

I drive a '99 CLK430 and ESP was on.. but it shouldn't make a difference, i think.

So what your saying is...NONE of you can see the logic in preventing your clk from reving to redline in park??? Do you guys actually own these cars? My car breaks something different every time I slam the damn door shut.

What I can't understand is, why in the world would you want to rev the engine to redline when it is in park in the first place? There has to be a bit of a risk of harming the
engine by running it up to max RPM without a load on it.

there =is= a big risk to revving the engine w/o a load on it. revving to 2K, 3K rpm is one thing, trying to hit redline??? I guess it's a lease...?

I guess when you are 18 years old and probably didn't pay for the car, you have to test certain things. like having the engine bounce off the rev limiter while parked.
