Talking Looking to purchase 2002 clk-320

Could I get advice on which clk 2000-2002 is the best year to purchase for this car? Also 2005 c230 or stick with the 2000-02 clk? Thanks

clk
Usually, the later models are better, given it's still the same body style because most of the bugs and defects would have been discovered and fixed by then.

Stick with the 2000 forward, MB did a face lift for 2000 on.

The older ones had worse wheels, no multifunction steering wheel and no touch shift, and no indicators in the side mirrors (they were on the side of the body instead). That's all that I can rememeber.

What is your price range? I have a 2002 CLK430 that I'm considering selling.

2001 CLK320
my pitch is for a CLK, go for the 2001 - 2002 range. The 2000 year was the first year for the updates (touch shift, Comand, etc) and the bugs were more worked out in the following '01 and '02 years.

The express-up window control modules had updates mid-way through the 2001 model run. Some cars had problems with them, some didn't. If you're looking at a '00 or '01 a MB dealer can look up the service history on the VIN to see what was done.

I had 4 different control modules put in mine until I finally got one that would work reliably. (my car was a Jan 2001 build)

There might not be as many '02s around as word of the '03 body style change was coming up and buyers may have held off on the W208.

The cabrio W208 body continued one more year beyond that.

I agree there were a lot of comments concerning the Window Up/Down in the forums then and MB fixed it in 2001, I think my car was a Feb 2001 build and I did not have a problem with that.

Another problem in the CLK that they fixed later in 2001 was the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank. See if that got replaced while the car was under warrantee. I had mine replaced in 02 and no problems since.

MAF sensor problems at around 20K - 25K miles are common.

Rear diff leakage also seems to occur around 35k - 40K miles, but a quick look under the car will show if that is a problem.

Cracked Dash around the SRS passenger (there is a rectangular molding in the dash with rounded corners on the passenger side, the top left or bottom left radius seemed to be where it would crack, so look hard (with a flashlight) to see if this has occurred.

All these problems should have been fixed under warrantee if they occurred.

About 2 weeks before my warrantee ran out I took it to the dealership and paid them to do an inspection (they will do this but not for free). They found the leaking rear diff and I had it fixed under the warrantee (it costs about $1300 to get it fixed at the dealer). I would recommend you spend $100 and get and car you are looking at inspected at a dealership. Mine has 42K miles and has been quite trouble free.

All the CLK208 sales included service so you should be able to get a print out of all the work done on any car you look at.

MB service is expensive so most people trade when the warrantee runs out (my usual practice except for my CLK320, it don't like the new one!) so there are good cars out there. If you buy, see if you can find a shop that works on MB this will save you a bundle vs. the dealer. If an owner has used non MB service ask to see the service records.

I am planning to keep the CLK320 so it is going to get some upgrades and complete service in the coming weeks, Evosport pulleys are on there way and I will probably replace the suspension, wheels and tires. After that I will probably chip the ECU.

Good luck it is a nice car!
