HELP!! - 1999 CLK430 VS. 2000 CLK430 CLUSTER (WILL 2000+ Work in a 1999??)

Need Help fast!!
Will the 2000+ clusters work in my 1999 CLK430?

I have a 1999 w208 clusters that has 1 big lcd that displays (mileage/trip/outside temp./time)

While the 2000+ has 3 smaller lcds on the cluster (1 that displays time, 1 for mileage/trip and 1 for outside temp)

Can the 2000+ be used on the 1999 w208 (clk430?)

Do you need a different harnass, or whats the case??
I want to know if the cluster will work in an older w208.
AND what i will need to make it work!!

Thanks for all your help
Hope to hear from you soon

Short answer: No.

2000+ has a system in it called COMMAND that requires different everything than what you have. You have to get a 98-99 cluster.

It will work, but you need a multifunction steering wheel as well as other modifications. Contact Steve (steve@mbenznl.com) for more info. You can upgrade to the multifunction cluster without the COMAND navigation system.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents since I have experience with this. I have a newer model instrument cluster (dont know which year but its the new design) in my 99 430 and it works fine. Plug and play. May not be able to do all the fancy stuff with the steering wheel but it can do all the functions the 99 cluster can do.

sure you can update the IC but to have full benefit of it, you should also get a steering wheel, airbag, SRS contactring, some connectors & some wiring and you are all up to 2000-date

greetingz,
Thats not what i was told earlier. I asked this question earlier and was told that the entire thing wouldnt work without command. Does the LCD display do anything without command? What about the steering wheel? Can you just do the multifunction steering wheel for the look and not have the buttons work?

And Joe, if you have questions about retrofitting, Steve's your man. And anything can be done with ehough time and money.

I contacted steve but he said i would need the steering wheel at the least, but someone above said it would work with out the steering wheel.

I am really confused now, But "BLACKBENZ" if you can assure me it works then i will go ahead and get the Cluster and slowly work my way to get the steering wheel then navigation.

Thanks for the comments, and if you have time "BLACKBENZ" give me a PM or leave another comment.

Thanks again guys and any more input would work.

Just wondering...what good is a multifunctional instrument cluster if you install it without a multifunctional steering wheel???

Why does one want a LCD screen with info that one cannot get to???

Swapping your current cluster for an MF cluster without updating the steering wheel is like adding big brake callipers in combination with the original small discs and tell people that you can still use the brakes cause it still slows you down...that just makes no sense at all.

Hmmmmm, maybe you would replace it with the newer style cuz it looks better and your old one stopped working . The comparison of the BBK is definitely NOT a good one. I understand you want to make more money but come on, if it works it works. It is plug and play!

Pretty much this is the case,

My old 1999 cluster has gone bad, i found the 2000+ one and bought it, i am planning or might upgrade to the steering wheel and the command navigation system.

But my first priortiy is will the 2000+ cluster work in my 1999+??

Pretty much the steering wheel and navigation are steps 2 and 3.

So sorry for all the confusion.. Thanks for all your help..

SO, I AM GUESSING THAT THE 2000+ CLUSTER WORKS FOR THE 1999? CORRECT?

NOOOOOO!!!!!

If you use a 2000 IC - it will work without failure message...if you use a 2001 or newer IC it will throw failure messages about a defective display.

I couldn't care less about making money on an MF upgrade...but what use can an MF cluster be if you cannot even use the MF part of it???? The only thing you can do is hit the R button and that is it...which is useless...

If you do the MF steering wheel upgrade without an MF IC - you will no longer have a functioning horn...AND you will have a similar useless setup as an MF IC without MF steering wheel..
