Snow tire recommendations...
I'm moving to the Boston area soon and am curious to know if anyone has good recommendations for tires in the winter weather. My plan is actually to garage the CLK and get something with AWD, but curious to know how other owners feel their car handles in the snow/ice.

How much cheaper is cheaper alternative? I am sure not very much anyway. And how much difference in performance between the "cheaper alternative" and the best tire on the market?

Merchant's - 4 X $23 = $92
Costco - 4 X $8(?) = $32

The Pirelli's I have are 'all-season' while the Michelin PS2s everybody is pushing on this thread are categorized to be for SUMMER ONLY but hey, that doesn't stop anybody this board!

Costco has a special on all Michellin tires till Sept5. Total package is $831-$60=$771. Check it out at website(they deduct $60 at very end of checkout). This includes delivery to store, installation, balancing, free rotation and lifetime road hazard insurance. I have had them for the last 4 months and would not go back to anything else (have had Contis and Toyos)

225/45/17 front
245/40/17 rear
standard stock sizes for clk 208s
Go to costco.com and check it out. If you want different sizes, they will order what you want but they are not listed online

Re: winter tires....If I hear that It will snow more that 1/2", I drive my wife and take her AWD. The ps2s are just terrible in the snow. I did have some A/S Pilot sports on my 430 and they did make quite a difference. I just didn't like how they handled in non snow days.

I have Fuzion's in the front and Kumho's in the rear.
I just got the rear Kumho's last week. They last for a really long time. I bought this car in Jan. 2005 and they already had Kumho's in the rear. Now its Sept. of 2006 and the Kumho's that came with my car still had some tread life (give or take a month or 2 of life left)
But someone cut my tire so I had to change them
I got the Fuzion's a few months ago and there's still a lot of tread left. They last for a while.
