electronic key

Anyone bought a key off e-bay and had it reprogrammed to work with their car? Or is this just a waste of $20 bucks. If so how much was programming or can you do it yourself.

Not possible, don't waste your money. If you need a spare, you gotta shell out big money at the dealership

Thats what I figured. I think about $280 at the dealer. How do all these people end up with one key to their cars.

I was wanting one for the case, my tip where it transmits is chipped off the corner. I figured I'd grab the case and swap them with some careful work, should be able to make it happen......... BUT the seller of those remotes does not respond to emails.

If you just wanna swap the case, it's definitely possible. I believe King320 did a writeup a while ago on how to do this.

Not a bad idea. I might just pick one up for the case. It can't be that hard to swap out the guts. I see peoples key all the time where the buttons are worn or cracked.

It's really easy, you take out the metal key and then insert it into the slot in the back on the butt of the key. This allows you to access the chip and battery. The only thing to be careful of is a little piece of plastic in there that holds the chip steady. Pull the battery out, pull the chip out carefully, I used needle nosed plyers but tweezers or something else would work. Then swap into new shell and done. I bought a new shell with a chrome star, mine was just all plastic, looked tacky.

Did the stealership sell you the shell? I have the older all-black case and want to swap it out for the newer style but I also noticed that the trunk/glovebox keys are smaller on the newer style keys so it wouldn't work in the swap.

Got the whole key on ebay. It's the same key as my old one, the only difference is instead of the "flat" plastic logo it has the raised chrome one. It's not the "new" style key that I have for the SL. It's still the triangle but I just think it looks better. I also just stuck in the old metal mechanical key, so it's totally functional, not that i've ever used that thing anyway.
