Help testing engine mounts

I recently ran into what I can only describe as a grave and not a pothole lol (NYC) and either blew out my Tranny mount or my engine mounts or both. Now I have a vibration that crazily shakes the exaust that occurs only when the car is in drive while I have the brakes applied. Never when the car is moving and the car is normal in park. This is leading me to believe that it was my tranny mount that blew. What do you guys think. I am ordering the tranny mount now and will put it in this weekend.

Is there a surefire way of telling if the engine mounts are shot? I never had any vibration problems before except a small one with the exhaust. Thanks in advance Guys.

Not sure what the problem could be but if your already changing the tranny mount I suggest you change the engine mounts as well since there's been a lot of people who own CLK's that have had motor mounts go bad. Bad mounts do cause excessive vibrations at idle and while your driving. I haven't suffered this symptom yet and I hope not anytime soon. Good luck and sorry to hear about your damage..

Thanks for the suggestion and sympathy CLKonDUBS. I looked under the car once while the exaust was shaking prior to this happening and saw the point where the exaust meets the tranny shaking so maybe the tranny is the culprit. I would rather buy and change the tranny mount for 27 bucks than to pay an extra $150 for the engine ones unless I was 100 percent sure I needed them.

.....I guess really now the question I have is does anyone know how to test the engine mounts without physically removing and inspecting them ???

Motor Mounts

That does sound more like a motor mount issue, although I'm not familiar with sspecific symptoms associated with trans mount failure. You can do a visual check on the mounts, although it takes a little crawling around to get a good view. Not the most accurate method - but you can see serious failure (collapse) easily. Another backyard diagnosis is to have someone do a brief power brake (give it some gas in D, holding down brake) while you look at the motor movement from the front. Might want to stand off to the side for that one. Repeat in R. Look for extreme motor movement from side to side when they hit the gas.
Also, check the rubber exhuast hangers (3 - I think). Getting that vibration while stopped in D is often linked to exhaust issues. If you smashed/bent a cat, you will see this exact condition occur. Or the exhaust could be rubbing against the heat shield. If the condition is significantly worse when the car is hot, you amost certainly have a cat/heat shield prob.
