first model year, a few minor problems, nothing big though, havent owned one, so ill let the others that have answer with their personal experiences, id say try to at least get a 99 : external appearance improvements and no first-year problems...

I would highly recommend you to get the 2000 and up models because there are many things that the 98 and 99 models don't have. I never had any problem with my 2001 CLK320.

W213 '17 E43 ///AMG - W211, W208 no more
i would say, at MINIMUM get a 1999, OPTIMALLY get a 2000+ model.

Why 1999? Because, chances are, a 1998 car's warranty will expire very soon if not already expired. If its a 1999 model, you will have at least a few months. Plus i think there are a few upgrades in '99 (new stereo, etc...)

2000+ models offer lots of changes, search the W208 forum, there has been lots of discussions about 98-99 versus 2000+

my .02 cents
