Vertical lines in clock, odometer display

I have an intermittent problem where in the display where it shows the odometer, clock etc I sometimes have a bunch of vertical lines. Looks kind of like a bar code. Some characters are still visible beneath it. Sometimes it goes away the same day, but I've had it last for a week. Any ideas? Also if I disconnect the battery cable what will I need to do when I reconnect?

You need a new/replacement cluster.

Mine periodically loses the right border of the last digit on the odometer and anything above it. Comes back on its own, but I can live with that. I don't really think I want to tear apart the dashboard to replace the cluster.

Cool

Pretty common from what I understand.
I have lost my outside ambient temp for good.
