Car Didn't Start - Plz Help Identify The Problem

I have a 2000 430, with about 45K on it.

The other day I was driving and after half an our of street driving, when I was at the stop light, the car all of a sudden kind of choked, wanting to stall, but it didn't. I continued driving normally. Then the next time I tried to start the car, it wouldn't start. The engin would turn but wouldn't start.

Finally, after 5 minutes and trying to start it for about 4-5 times, it started fine and is been starting and operating for the past 3 days.

Does anyone know what might have happened or what is about to break?

Could it be the MAF going bad?

2001 CLK430 (Black)
I drive a 2001 CLK 430.
Two weeks ago my car did the same thing.

My problem was the Crank position sensor.
I paid $250.00 for a new one and to have it installed.

I had the exact same symptoms and it was the CPS Crankshaft Position Sensor. I think I paid like 30 or 40 bucks for the sensor ( I cant remember exactly but it wasnt expensive at all). It only took me 30 minutes to change it out. It is only one bolt to take off and you can replace it. Do a search, I remember someone doing a detailed how to.

Thanks for all the replies.

It seems like it is the position sensor, but doing a search online, apparently there are two different sensors:

1 - camshaft position sensor
2 - crank position sensor

Any ideas which one is the problem?

Here is the witeup with some pics on how to replace the crank position sensor. (camshaft position sensor is a different part having to do with fuel injection and engin lights goes off if a problem).

By the way, two dealerships i talked to, one said it's easy as just replacing the part, the other said after installing the new part, your car needs to be re-programmed.

I know for a fact that it does not need to be reprogrammed. MAYBE just MAYBE if you have a CEL code come up and it needs to be reset but I didnt get a Check Engine Light when mine went out.

The computer is supposed to be calibrated to the new hall sensor. Something about sensitivity. Does it NEED to be done? Prolly not if the replacement parts are built to a standard set of tolerances. I had one done at the dealer (E55) under warranty and another (CLK430) at a local garage. The dealer calibrated it on SD and the indy did not. Both cars run great but the one in E55 is showing signs that it is failing again.

Thanks for the nice and detail write up. Is it at the same location for CLK430? Thanks. I plan to do it this weekend.
