320 Strange whining sound.

320 Strange whining sound.
I have a 320 from 2000 with 75.000 miles on the clock.
During the past 3 months I have experienced a loud whining sound - like an electrical pump sound - coming from the rear of the car when starting from cold. It´s only happened 5 or 6 times, and disappears after I apply the brakes after a couple of miles or so. I have tried applying the brakes a few times before this - but it seems like the car needs a couple of miles of travel and a dead stop before the sound will disappear.
Any words of wisdom?
