dash display malfunction

Hello,

My wife just noticed in her 98 CLK dash display, at the clock display, is not as bright as the rest of the display. Can anyone shed some light regarding this problem? Her car is not cover by the warranty since February and what kind of repair will she need? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

.......my car is at the dealer for the same problem. they are replacing the entire instrument cluster. i thought it would be something simple. Still suprised that such a drastic measure is the only solution.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. This is going to be expensive!!! My wife said she doesn't mind right now but she wants it repair if more of the dash becomes dimmer. I am glade I bought extra 2 years of extended warranty for my E55 so I don't have to deal with this later.

I had this same problem. It did NOT require a new cluster. I was told there was a Service Bulletin on this. The solution (I think...it was some time ago) was replacing the cluster bulbs with ones with a lower wattage. It had something to do with the heat generated by the higher wattage bulbs.

...........I just picked up my car from the dealer. I was told that this has nothing to do with bulbs and that no bulbs are involved. It is an LCD display like in a quartz watch. Mine is a 2000 car and perharps pre-2000 involves bulbs. In any case, I prefer that you be coorrect because I think it makes no sense for such a simple problem to require cluster replacement. In any case, my instrument cluster was replaced and the display is fine.

My car was a 98...and I know the 2000 and later ones were different. I agree that bulbs should make no difference, but that's what the dealer told me and that's what the service record showed. I would look it up, but after I sold the car (the headaches never ended) I threw out the service receipts.
