How long did your brakes lasted?

I am getting "change your brakes" message on my car after 18,000 miles. How long did your brakes lasted?

Also, anyone has any idea how much I would need to pay to change them? SHould I go to the dealer or an independent shop?

thanks.

Well, during my A service, I was told I still have 9mm on my pad. I believe, most brake pads originate with 12mm. So, after 12,000 miles, I lost 3mm. I suppose mine would last about 30,000 miles.

But again, it all depends on your driving habits and how hard you brake. I think pad average about 22-25,000.

I use to go through my pads at about 20,000 miles, and I know people who go through them at 60,000 miles. MB brake pads are extra soft, so they ware faster.

I just had my service B (23,000 miles) and the report was 50% front pads left and 55% rear pads left.

I don't track my car but I drive often.

I have 45,000 on my CLK55. Most of my driving is highway.

I once had a Saab which I used to commute on roads with lots of traffic lights. I was getting 6-8K miles.

There is no exact answer to pad mileage. "It depends".

20,000 miles seems to be about the norm for the CLK pads. Rotors last around 30,000. Brake life varies on major factors besides just driving habits. People who live in hills, or other areas where they are required to brake more tend to get less than those who live in flat areas. Traffic also makes a big difference, as stop and go driving uses brakes much more than highway driving.
