Question Ignorant? Want to change oil filter...

any step-by step instructions for this novice. Is the filter housed in the round canister near the front of the car? Do I need a tool to open it? Once opened, will oil spill out or has it drained out? Thanks in advance. Just reached 1000 miles on my '03 CLK 430 Cab and want to avoid a dealer visit.

All of them, as much as I can...
Get a suction-type oil changer and do it at the dipstick. and yes, it's that round thingy at the front (oil filter). Once you've gotten all the oil out, it won't drip. I didn't need a tool to undo it when I did my CLK and the E430, just a lot of grunting, but there is a filter wrench available for it at your local pepboyz. I got one so I could torque it properly next time.
The filter itself is a ***** to remove off of the rod that holds it; and if it doesn't come off bare-handed, try tapping it with a rubber mallet or something. Don't break the plastic rod. The filter will eventually come off. Make sure you change and lube the o-rings. After you get all the oil out, fill the case through the oil filter hole. It's easier.

Good luck.

Drain the oil from the bottom. You risk not removing the sludge/heavy debris with the topsider.

Thanks for the advice guys. Since I

had a rear differential seal leak (@1200 miles), I took the car to the dealer for warranty work. While they were at it, I had them change the oil/filter to the tune of $104 (Mobil 1 20W-50). I will change it myself once before flexi indicator comes on.
