Wheel dimensions

I have seen alot of people have for ex: 225x40x18 on the front wheels and 245x35x18 on their back wheels. I wonder why ? The diameter of the tire will be different from eachother.
I´m thinking of buying Carlsson 18" to my CLK and dont know exactly which tires to buy. If I put on tires with another diameter the the original 215x55x16, do I have to adjust the (dont know the english word) wheel settings. So I dont wear out the tires on the inside or the outside.. Hope you understand....
How wide tires can I use without any major adjustments. Thinking of the fenders ??

Sorry for my poor english...

225/40/18F 255/35/18R will not rub against your fender/car with right suspension setup, if you use different spring pads or cut springs, they'll definately rub and wear out unevenly real fast.

You can also use this setup with the factory suspension although your call will sit a bit higher due to the increased overall diameter of the wheel.

Yeah, but I assumed that he's going to lower the car with aftermarket springs.

Tnx
It´s an avantgarde.. Isn´t avantgardes lower then Elegance ??
Do you recommend to lower it even more ?? The roads here in the north of Sweden aren´t the best. I don´t what it to be to bumpy so I have to drive like my grandmother... If you know what I mean..
