Help! drink spilled = shifter problems..

New to the forum, and in need of some help! Spilled a drink all over the shifter assembly & console (I know..). Slapped myself then cleaned up thoroughly but it was too late.

Car will start and shift down into drive, but not back up past neutral to reach R or P. Getting to P requires turning ignition off, moving it back to P.

Car also not going past 1st gear, nor is dash gear selector box displaying anything - just a white box.

Anyone run into this before and/or know which part(s) are likely affected? Seems like it's an electrical part telling the rest of the transmission which gear is selected, and the car is defaulting to a 'safe' mode of sorts and not shifting out of 1st. Turning engine over takes an extra second than normal as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I've seen the same posted several times on the W211 forum. You could try to open the cover and use a blower to dry it, carefully.

Thanks.. took to my mechanic and said he does these all the time. Unfortunately 'must' replace entire shifter assembly. Tip: don't buy part from dealer, check out BuyMBparts.com. Saved $200 off dealer price w/ overnight shipping.

Or, don't spill a drink down the shifter gate..
