Angry Power pulleys

I got my evo sport power pulleys, so I went to my shop.
He says he will need to take out the radiator, all hoses, water pump, power steering pump, because he will have to use an impact gun to take out the pulleys, and it doesn't fit without taking everything out.
Total labor 6 hours $390.= Is this reasonable or is he out of his mind. I thought more like $100.=
How much do guys paid for getting the job done, and do you know any decent shop in South Florida?

Your mechanic is wrong!!! He needs a tool called a pulley puller that takes the pulleys out without removing the parts listed above! Trust me, my mechanic told me that too, i talked to ben, ben explained how it should be done, i told my mechanic, my mechanic had the tool, and it was simple...

my mechanic is a good friend, thats why we go there instead of MB dealer for stuff like the pulleys. I pay him $60 an hour because hes a mechanic, and im obviously not, he would do things like this for free, but i insist on paying him....

My mechanic whom I know for 10 years, and is the one I use besides my dealer, is getting to expensive latelly. He charges $65 an hour, but is coming with this BS of "this is a big job" you got to do this and that, therefore a lot of hours. I need a new mechanic!

well maybe based on past things this is true, but my mechanic, before talking with Ben, honestly did think it was a much bigger job that it really was. He just isnt as used to working on late-model mercedes, he works on the older Mercedes my dad likes to keep but not the new ones....ask him about the pulley puller, thats all it takes to pry the pulleys off (takes plenty of "OOMPH")

Tom,

Your mechanic is going about the installation in a very roundabout way. I would compare his method to filling up your gas tank by driving another car to the station, filling up a can, going home and putting the 3 gallons in your tank, and repeating this 5 times. Email vadim@evosport.com, and tell him everything you posted. He will make it much clearer for your mechanic.

Thanks,

Ben

Thanks Ben, I just e-mailed vadim, and will wait for his response.
Then I'll go back to my mechanic.

I got response from Vadim@evosport.
He says that the hardest part is to remove the stock PS pulley and installing the UD one. The overflow bottle has to be removed to gain access. I'll keep you guys posted!

UD pulleys install if fairly straight forward.

On a V6 it takes 1.5 hours. Access to alternator, water pump and power steering pump is very easy and it is simply a matter of taking your time and making sure everything is lined up.

On a V8 it takes 3 hours, mainly due to tighter clearance around power steering pump. Radiator needs to be drained, upper hose removed and overflow bottle lossened up.

In the end the power and gains in throttle response in lower gears are well worth it.

Unhappy

My mechanic is soo stubborn, he doesn't even want to call Vadim@Evosport. I guess his "pride" won't let him agree that he is wrong!
Does anybody had their pulleys replaced in south Palm Beach, FL at a decent price?.....I wish there was an evosport around.

Tom,

We have an affiliate shop in Palm Beach. I will look up their contact information, and send it to you.

Ben never got back with his Palm Beach affiliate shop, so I convinced my mechanic to finally do the job for $275 + 14 for the antifreeze + 510.19 for the power pulleys total installed $800, that's $61.50 per hp. I haven't had a change to drive my car yet, so I will check it out tomorrow.
I will let you guys know if I feel any difference.

Thumbs up

OK, I finally got a chance to test my car with the UD pulleys. 0-60 it is definitely much faster the car feels much loose, it just want's to go. It was worth it. Now with the K&N filter, the AMG exhaust and the ud pulleys I should have around 300 HP. I have to check my 0-60 times, but should be under 6 seconds, I hope!
