MY2000+ Instrument Cluster

There is a posting for a Canadian CLK instrument cluster for sale at the following thread:

HERE
It reads: Hey, I have a spare cluster I dont need. It has around 5000 km on it. Its from a canadian clk MY 2000+ with vehicles with the steering wheel controls.

I tried it out in my 99 clk changes the look of the interior and works well. It DOES work in the US vehicles fine, except the speedo goes to 260 km but has the mph on the inner ring.

My question is, if anyone here can tell me does changing the cluster effect the actual mileage that the car has?

My friend has a '99 CLK320 Cab and is interested in getting the new cluster. He has about 26,000 miles, and he's afraid that by changing the cluster, the dealer might think he's trying to tamper with the car's mileage. And since he has the 100,000 mile warranty, he doesn't want to get that VOIDED because of this.

Any Insight??? -Thanks in Advance!

I doubt if the cluster worked 100% correctly in his other car?
I'm not saying it doesn't work, what I'm saying is that the cluster is just a display. The car that it is installed in has it's actual mileage stored in one of the cars many computers.
Be it PCM, BCM, excreta...
To have it work properly a knowledgeable tech needs to hook up a scan tool and have it tell the system that a new cluster is being installed. Then and only then will all the cars information be displayed correctly. As long as a MB dealer or certified shop does it should work fine.
Best of luck to ya,
Tim

Actually, the cluster does have the mileage in it, and if you plug it in, most things will work (plug it in at noon so that the clock starts correctly, because you probably will not be able to set the clock).

However, you should take the cluster to the dealer. The dealer can take the new cluster and program the correct mileage in it (which will match stored mileage in other control units in the car). The dealer can also version code the cluster so that it is appropriate for the car. If you had steering wheel controls you could also select settings, such as MPH/KPH, 12H/24H clock, F/C temperature, etc.

haha... i didn't even think about that. i guess since the new cluster uses the steering wheel to change the clock and he has no steering wheel control... nice one

he hasn't decided if he want to make the change just yet... thanks for all the info though guys

Steve, I know you have the magic to make that happen. But no Benz dealer would touch that. And I know of no one else who can do it but you.

How much would you charge?

Danny,
Has your friend completed this upgrade? I found a MY2000+ cluster for sale and am wondering if this is a worthwhile upgrade.

i had my instrument cluster replaced with that of a CLK55. They took my cluster and sent it to germany, they then downloaded my data onto the new cluster. They kept my old cluster and when i asked them why, they said that instrument clusters cannot be kept as spare parts and therefore customers cant retain them either.

But i know for a fact that the data on the cluster has to tally with that of the onboard unit for the car to even start! So i'm surprised that your friend managed to swap clusters and still be able to operate the vehicle!

i may be wrong, cause different markets have diferent specs. It works just like an ECU! There's no chance an ECU from another car will work, the engine wont even start!

Brian, we tried it in his CLK, but it didn't fully function since he didn't have steering wheel controls to control the screen.

But all needles function, and guages move accordingly... just he couldn't flip through the menu pages on the center display...

we ended up pulling it back out and just stuck with the OEM cluster.

If you really want the new look, have Steve redo the complete cluster WITH a functional steering wheel control
