99 CLK 430
CLK 430 idle problems

CLK 430 idle and shift issue

I have a 99 clk 430 and just changed the plugs and oil a month ago. I normally drive pretty casual and have no problems with the car however tonight I floored it from a stop light and got up to 100MPH on a long stretch then slowed back down with no problems. Then later in the evening when I was heading back home the car was hesitating and sort of "jerking" when I would pull away slowly from a stop light. Almost felt like the car was going to die. When I stopped at a stop light the engine was sounding a little weird/different now!!!!!!!!! Notice that the engine sounds weird when starting and when in park now, and when in drive the weird sound goes away. No error codes are showing up on the display. Anyone know what may be happening????

hi, check your spark plugs and wires and maybe its a sign of the maf going bad...

01 CLK 55 AMG (W208)
hi,

the same thing happened to my 01 CLK 55 a few months back. it actually died 2X on me on the traffic lights. i also noticed power was a bit lacking. i brought it to a shop and was diagnosed with an Air Mass problem. i had it replaced and everything was fine. hope this works for you.

Just like many others said, it could be the MAF. However, I would clean the MAF and do a ECU reset to see if it solves the problem before spending $ on the new MAF

OK,
Thanks everyone for the advise. I made friends with a master tech at the stealership. He offered to drive it and put it on a lift to check it out for free. A indy shop told me my tranny was pretty much gone without looking. He said that the tranny seemend fine after driving it but when he lifted it he got a rubber mallet and tapped the "cat" and it raddled like crazy!! He also said my engine mounts needed replaced and a shock absorber for the steering needed to be replaced soon. We will see if this is the issue. I will let everyone know.

If it isn't the MAS then check the plugs again for fouling... the fast acceleration with thin oil will foul the plugs pretty fast if the engine has high milage or the valve guide oil seals are leaking (from wear and age).

What grade of oil did you put in this last time before the problem occurred?

stay away from the really thin oil if engine is high mileage.. 0W, 5W, 10W.
