They're in the up position and I can't for the life of me figure out how to release them so they lie flat again.

Look for the button above your radio with a picture resembling a headrest. When you find it, push it and hold it for a moment. I suggest you do this while your parents are sitting in the back seats, asleep, with their heads leaning back.
