air filter

Hi im new to this forum

anyways has anyone installed an air filter or if they know any good brands?

I'm actually missing the pipe for the stock air filter and thought I might as well get an entire new one

Is there any difference when installing an air filter? I know on a BMW, there's a slight difference in sound and performance but have heard on a Mercedes there isn't

I love the sound from a M3 but know I can't achieve that by just adding an air filter to my current CLK
does anyone know an air filter which sounds similar though? I dont want rice rocket sounds please

hi,

If u install a 9 inch K&N cone filter on your CLK, ur definitely gonna notice the difference in sound my friend! ITS AWSUM.

As for performance.. may be just a little bit as far as initial throttle response is concerned.

But mainly the beasty sound will impress you. TRUST ME, I have one installed.

Cool

Bruce, did you buy the kit for the CLK from K&N or you adapt it. I have two K&N filters in my original filter housing.

I just bought the filter from Pepboys and did the rest myself, home-made intake but it works.

Do you feel like it adds power because of higher suction of air besides the nicer sound?

I can't feel any major different performance wise, the only thing I can feel is when I floor the car the filter goes crazy, I think it's sucking a lotta air, so it should help a little. I get this wistle-like sound everytime I accelerate, first I thought it was my cracked windshield, the air is coming in from the crack, but after I got new windshield, the sound is still there, it sounds like a turbo, but more quiet, you can hear it though.

Mine makes the same noise when I floor it, I guess with the V-8 helps it out, even tough I have the original air filter housing, my exhaust growls nice too

It sounds deeper, looks cool, but if it's sucking up hot air from the engine do you really get a performance increase? Shouldn't you sort of try to divert some of that hot air being generated by the engine?

agreed. its hard for me, not knowing much, to question what Mercedes does, they are the experts, but why put the airbox on top of the engine block??? and has anyone looked at where the stock intake tubes take air from? definitely not getting any direct air from outside the car.....

That's why I didn't put the K&N cones and only the K&N drop-ins.

wow lowryder,

Thats just like my filter.. except the pipe! My 3 inch PVC pipe drops straight down and doesnt curve towards the original airbox location.

It sucks colder air in straight through the lower grills but at the same time, it sucks all the crap that gets blown up into the compartments from below. So i'd love to make a pipe like yours!

How do you like the sound, funky huh? Is that a 320?

I'm trying to find a place that would do a custom pipe for me so I can have the pipe goes down to the bumper and maybe a shield to protect the filter. I bought my pipe at HomeDepot for like $5.

i can't get a shield for my setup. It has to be one of those that bolts around the neck of the filter, cant find one my size though.

I'll take some pic 2morrow and post them. ( after I clean my engine compartment..its embarrassingly dirty and dusty)

I custom made my pipe from a 3 inch PVC about a foot in length.
