Clunking noise while turning off driveway

Hi there.

I have a 2003 CLK430 convertible. When I reverse out of my driveway and turn onto the street, as the front wheel drops down the curb, there is a clunk from that side. I can feel it through the steering.

The noise also happens on the other side when I drive onto the driveway from the street.

The noise doesn't seem to happen if I drive out of my driveway onto the street in a straightline so the wheels aren't at an angle as they come down the curb.

Any ideas what is wrong, is it the ball joints?

The car has 37,000 miles on it.

Thanks.

This happened on my car 2 years ago...if we are on the same page, then it would be the BALL JOINTS...mine called for both the left & right. Same symptoms...it will only make that sound when your wheels are either turned to the left/right and you are either going up or down a driveway. As for the cost, I'm not sure since mine was done under warranty.

Thanks for the info Rocko.

Sounds like exactly the same symptom. I'm not in warranty, so I'm trying to decide whether main dealer or indy. I may just opt for main dealer, they've been good in the past, but I haven't had to pay for anything until now!!

IMHO, if you can afford it i'd go to the dealer. They usually have a warranty for 12monts unlimited miles just in case something happens. Knock on wood. If not, any reputable shop can do it. Im in the process of lowering my car right now. I found this shop in the bay area that will install the h&r springs and bilstein sports. I know I also need to replace my control arm bushings but soon. Lol! When money permits. Anyway, good luck.

Anyone know what replacing ball joints might cost?

I took the car to the dealer, and the noise was indeed caused by the lower balljoints. Cost was about $360 out the door. Two ball joints, some nuts / bolts, labor and tax.
