Tried resetting Check Engine light, now ABS, BAS/ESP are on as well???
I tried resetting my Check Engine light on my 99 CLK430 by unhooking the negative cable of the battery for 15 minutes (I think this is supposed to work??) and when I reconnected it and restarted my car I got the Check Engine, ABS, BAS/ESP lights as well.....what is going on, did I break something?
Also, I found out that O'Reilly (auto parts store) rents an OBD-II reader, so I rented it and it is scanning successfully, but saying that the Check Engine light is not on?? Anyone have any experience with the Auto XRay units? Check them out at www.autoxray.com
TIA
Your windows also have lost their auto up/down functions. To fix this, hold down both window buttons 1 click (not all the way) until they are lowered completely. No press it further (2nd click), and hold it for 10 seconds. Do the same thing for raising it. This will fix your auto windows.
Your moon roof no longer goes back automatically. To fix this, hold it in the forward position for 5 seconds, then the up position for 5 seconds.
You also will need your radio code to be able to use your radio.
It is not normal for your check engine light to come on immediately after reseting the battery (clearing the code). I suggest you get a code reader (go to Pep Boys and have them scan it). Once you have the code, go to http://www.obdii.com/codes.html and see what it means.
The BAP/ESP and ABS lights all went off after driving a mile or so; no need to worry about those, so I'm back to just the Check Engine light, which I will eventually visit the dealer for.
Mach430, you rock
I was just going to post about these issues! I got the radio code done, but I was sure I had caused serious problems by unhooking the battery! Is unhooking the battery for a specified amount of time the correct way to reset the Check Engine light? Just like I said in my original post, the OBD-II code reader showed that the Check Engine light wasn't on when in fact it was glowing in my face!
Thanks guys!
There is nothing wrong with disconnecting the battery to reset the light, but that does not eliminate whatever set off the fault code in the first place. There's no need to wait 15 minutes though. Next time the battery is disconnected, hold down the brake pedal until the brake lights don't light up (1-2 seconds). Doing that will use up any remaining power in the car.

it could be the o2 sensor, or either u topped off while refueling or didn't screw the top on tight enough.
if so, unscrew, and rescrew tightly and start your car a few times. should go away after a few drives (if that was the problem).
