Just Is

my key has been working off and on. I have replaced the batteries, thinking that would be the issue, but its still the same. What seems to get it to work is to pop it open (as if to replace the batteries), then close it. It also seems to help to start the car, the turn it off and remove the key. Otherwise I cannot lock it or unlock it.
any ideas? what does it cost for a replacement?
