Car Amnesia?

Car Amnesia?
Help!
My car won't accept my key. Came home, hosed off some dirt on my car, came back into my car....and the key wouldn't turn. Then there is a beep saying "Take out key". It goes in, but just can't start the ignition. Everything else works fine. Locking, unlocking....etc.
Has anyone had this problem....and is there a way to fix it ourselves. So for now, my car is sitting outside, all wet in this cold to be -3C night! Ahh...I can only imagine how my car will look like in the morning. All frozen

A quick fix I've found for this problem is to rapidly insert and remove the key from the ignition 10 times or so. That usually works to start the car, but it still needs to be taken into the dealer. You're most likely needing a new key. Take a close look at your key. Right next to the panic button, on the side of the key, there are seven numbers. If the first three digits are not "221", you need a new key.

There are several suggestions, including: Wiggle the steering wheel while reinserting the key a couple of times!

I think it's a number based on when the key was made. Yours, being a 2002, is probably new enough to not be effected by whatever problem she has. Either that, or you should go knock on wood ASAP!

my smartkey is the first gen one. the bigger one w/ the panic button on the rear base of the key. but, never had any of these key problems people in this forum seem to be having.
