Torqued steering gear bolts today

I mostly lurk these days but every so often I pick up some good advice here, last time I was reading a few threads I came across a post from MarcusF about Torqueing steering gear bolts. Today I got around to it. Each bolt needed about 1/8 of a turn!

Hate to think what happens if they come loose.

My car has 70,000 miles and I don't think this has ever been done before.

Thanks

Marcus

Hard to tell, there may be less suspension noise over bumps.

I retorqued my bolts as well and I noticed a small difference but all my bolts were about 1/4 turn loose. My steering was making some knocking sounds when you would move the steering back and forth fast. I also have some slight loosening of the steering as well. The re-tightening helped with the sound a little and seemed to help with the tighter steering.

I still have the knock though and just got it back from the dealership. They stated that its my steering gear box getting worn. It is barely noticable and they said its too small of a difference to change it out. Small to them but I know its there!! I declined politely when they stated 2800 bucks to change the gear box

I found it for 250-350 on various sites...I will have to figure out how to replace it myself. Any how-to's on this subject?

Greg
