Noise from rear deck on CLK430

Noise from rear deck on CLK430
I bought a 2002 CLK 430 last month with 49K miles in excellent condition. I am getting a thumping noise coming from the rear deck over rough roads or holes. I have checked and it is not coming from the headrests and the deck is secure with no movement. I thought it might be coming from the plastic cover beneath the rear rug or spare but have battened everything down. Anyone else experience this and if so do you know of a fix, it's very annoying. Could it be a bad shock hitting the frame?

I have noises that I can never find or maybe I just need someone to help find them while I drive. They go away and the come back...it's the love I have for my car that makes me tolerate it.
