Nah, no biggie

I have driven with the stock performance tires for the past 2 winters( this is the 3rd). As long as you have it on W, and go SLOW the car is fine. I've driven on at least 4-5 inches of snow, for a good 50 miles and no problem

W eliminates the use of 1st gear, which when used normally will put too much power to the wheels during rain or snow. I haven't used S in the snow, but it's kind of fun to skid 30ft straight (thank you ESP) in the rain.

(Do that at your own risk, I don't advise it)

If the need arises again, try turning ESP off. The ASR functionality of ESP kicks in a bit prematurely and cuts engine power. As most people know, when you turn off ESP, it still isn't completely disabled. When you turn ESP off, it will still apply brakes to one slipping rear wheel, but it won't cut engine power. So you still have traction control and full power and this will allow you to accelerate a little faster on snow. Of course, since you're driving on snow, it's a good idea to turn it off ONLY when you're trying to accelerate. Turn it back on as soon as you get moving because the other ESP functionality might still save you from sliding sideways into a parked car.

kingman, you're right.
I had the same thing happen to me in les snow than you. I kept getting stuck. Pulled up at the lockal cafe to meet a buddy of mine when I realized I wasn't all the way up in my parking spot.
I put it back in drive, and the car would not move. Winter setting made no dif. either did the TC. Next day I bought some winter tires and a set of the MOST UGLY steel rims you've EVER seen, and the car drives better than a 4X4 in the snow.

nickm maybe your tires are different?

I don't know, but I can honestly say that before the snow tires, my car was by far the worst driving experiance I ever had.

Even in compared to the time I drove my vette home & got caught in the snow.....I had a pair of 315/35-17 Hoozier drag radials on.

I believe this is a big no no for the CLK, especially on the CLK430, I think I read this in the owner's manual. Chains are not an option, you have to get snow tires.

Michelin Pilot Sport AS on snow?

On the subject of snow, has anyone had any experience with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (all season) tires on snow? These tires are on my CLK430, I noticed that the gaps between the tread are fairly wide, which should help their performance on snow.... I haven't had the chance to try them on the white stuff though.

Well, for the CLK430, I think it has something to do with the 430's staggered tire configuration, and the fact that the rear drive tires are wide, low profile tires. Generally it's much more likely that chains that will damage the wheel and tires in this situation.

That's correct. There's a risk of major damage using chains on the CLK430. If you want to use chains, you're supposed to use narrower wheels and tires.

Just had a dusting here

I find it helps a lot to turn ESP off if you get stuck. It didn't help me get into my garage though... for that I needed to get out and use the shovel !

Of course it doesn't help that my tires are pretty treadless right now. I will be getting a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S when I get a chance...

Not just that. Up here in Canada, where with our winters, chains could be used on cars; the law does not allow it, because it would cause big damage on the roads.
To my knowledge, chains are only allowed in Europe, and as of sometime in the 70’s their use became illegal in North America. (Well I know it did in Canada)

Hee hee....Lucky for me my car's resting at MB for the last week.
Still driving the ugly green loaner ML 320 since last Thrusday. I had an ignition lock failure if u don't recall...and now, they are fixing the creaking noise coming from the back of the car. Have to weld it tighter?
Its been crazy winter conditions here in Vancouver. The whole week, its been snowing and raining as well. Last night, went to watch "Count of Monte Cristo", came out, there must of been at least 3cm of snow! Driving home was fun in the ML....especially even more fun because it's not your car! Salt trucks....hee hee, I didn't care!
By the way, it was a very good movie!
