Radar Detector Install - A different location
I thought this might interest a few people.
I have done this on two cars and the detector seems to work quite well in this location, judging by its ability to sniff out K and Ka band stuff.
I did this for a number reasons firstly in CT (where I used to live) it was illegal to install a detector and in this location the boys in blue don't get the benefit of seeing the alarm when they approach from behind with their radar on, secondly I don't like the distraction of a detector in the middle of the window, the detector is easy to reach to adjust and finally the drivers side lower left is nice and close to an internal fuse box so it was easy to hide the wires.
I used fuse location 4 and tapped in to the top half of the fuse so that the unit is fused. It is a 15-amp fuse so I also installed a small in-line fuse with the detector.
Grounding turned out to be a bit more of a challenge so I removed some paint and bolted the ground line in place.
Also the rear laser detector will not function. I don't care since laser detectors are rare and in general don't work well. Laser detector beams are very narrow and will miss the detector and the duration of the light pulse is short so unless you invest in laser counter measures and multiple detectors you are probably toast if they get you!
The detector is an Escort 8500, great unit!
See pics for details.
(I have netscape browser)
I have it located to the right side of the rear view mirror, w/velcro to the fabric on top.
Had it hardwired into my SL 500 to the rear view mirror garage door wiring by Sound Advice tech/
The MB sub tried this on the CLK 55 and messed/mixed up the wires. He then hard wired it to the cigarette lighter and everything works well!

Prefer my location next to rear view mirror - right side.
