Nice car !!
have you got dials or a control unit ? Mine is dials and I agree its a bit misleading on what you need to do to have climate control. IF you have dials I'll explain....
Just turn the dials so that the white area is showing in the middle, make sure the EC button is not pressed (if it was pressed then it lights up with a red LED, therefore this should NOT be on)...and thats it ! You dont need to touch the dials or EC buttons the car is now on climate control mode and will be warm on cold days and AC cold on hot days! IF you want to get colder or hotter then you can manualy turn the dials, then put them back to the white area for auto climate mode.
Good luck !

IT may need gas like you said... I have learnt that you need to use the Climate control as I described frequently otherwise your AC seals can dryout and leak the gas. It says this in the book, to use it a t least once a week for 15mins or so.
I dont know if your in the UK, but a tip is to go to Kwik-fit they will clean, check, and recharge your system for £45 and is the same unit that Mercedes dealer use. They also do it in winter for only £25 !
