Proper way to applying emergency/parking brake?

Just wondering how people here apply the e-brake when parking their car.

I always shift to park, then apply the e-brake, then release the foot brake, then engine off. But I've heard people shifting to neutral first, then apply the e-break, turn engine off, then shift to park.

Are both ways correct? And whats the correct sequence for releasing the e-brake?
